Meet the Maker
After raising a family of 3, Fiona decided to leave her successful career in teaching PE and Well-Being to follow her passion for pottery.
Raised in Surrey with a garden full of clay, Fiona used to spend time making clay tea sets when she wasn't swimming or playing sport. Through school - sport, science and maths prevailed over art, becoming her focus for her first career. Even though she will tell you her favourite A level was History of Art, totally inspired by her teacher, Christine Sharp. She qualified in Sports Science with Primary teaching at Worcester University. Here she also discovered her love of green spaces and spent many weekend in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, leading to her move to the county of Sussex.
Leaving teaching in 2020 was the start of learning something new, Fiona trained as a vaccinator in the pandemic thinking her new career would be still be in a scientific field, but it wasn't where she was happiest. Enjoying passions for tiling, parquet flooring, creating unique garden furniture and having made many a novelty celebration cake for family and friends, Fiona wondered why it took her so long to release where her passions lay!
In 2021 Fiona decided cakes weren't the way forward for her but she could use her modelling skills in a different way. She took two online hand building courses provided by Domestika (see Links) and a throwing course but felt most grounded through her connectivity with the clay when hand building. It has taken nearly 2 years for Fiona to feel ready to bring her work to the market place. Through this journey she has spoken with many artists (see Links) who have been profoundly kind and sharing in their knowledge and enthusiasm for their art. After hosting a review and sharing her latest collection of handmade ceramics with family and friend's in December 2022, she is ready to go live. Please join her on her journey as she continues her learning (more courses planned for 2023) in the different styles of pottery and glazing. Fiona's quirky humour and personality is seen through her work, through its design and glazing techniques. Fiona welcomes comments and questions through her website or social media. Find out more in her blogs and FAQs about hand building and how she will market her work.
When she's not potting Fiona enjoys nothing more than walking her dog in the surrounding countryside of her Sussex home, where she finds inspiration for her work. When not playing with clay you may find her resetting herself in the cold waters off of the Sussex coast, this has been reflected in her makes.
